Summer Haunted Morsels
A house is never still in darkness to those who listen intently; there is a whispering in distant chambers, an unearthly hand presses the snib of the window, the latch rises. Ghosts were created when the first man awoke in the night.
James M. Barrie
In the return of the summer blockbuster, this latest release will check every box for fall-season-loving moviegoers, Walt Disney’s Haunted Mansion.
The plot recreates the beloved Disney attraction, a historic New Orleans residence with a dubious reputation. In screenwriter Katie Dippold’s adaptation, a family (portrayed by Rosario Dawson and Chase Dillon) inquires for a priest (Owen Wilson) to exorcise spirits from their home. To assist is a supporting cast of a historian (Danny DeVito), a paranormal expert (LaKeith Stanfield), and a French Quarter psychic (Tiffany Haddish). Keeping true to Disney’s unique characters, Jamie Lee Curtis plays the all-knowing Madame Leota, and Jared Leto is the legendary Hatbox Ghost.
The Haunted Mansion had its world premiere at Disneyland on July 15th to well-received reviews. Its official release is July 28th, with some theaters playing limited showings as early as July 26th. Learn more about the film, its cast, and available showtimes at the AMC website.
Did You Know? The Haunted Mansion opened in 1969 at Disneyland in New Orleans Square. In 1971 in Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom, and 1983 in Tokyo’s Disneyland. The Parisian version, Phantom Manor, has a slightly different storyline, as Hong Kong’s Mystic Manor takes its cues more from traditional Chinese culture with inspirations from the original Mansion ride.
