A Place At The Table

Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.

Henry Van Dyke

The Thanksgiving meal is a gathering of warmth and intimacy. A peaceful feast to share among family and friends. It’s a reflection of comfort and hospitality conveyed in its fine details. Special attention to dining location, choice of place settings, and decorative nuances will make this holiday memorable.

Location

This event celebrates food and conversations, so strategically use the dining space. Keep it open, bright, and ventilated. Divide large gatherings among well-placed tables rather than crowding guests uncomfortably at one. Be mindful of avoiding drafty corners or vents of excessive heat. No guest should freeze or melt by the main course. Soft lights mood an evening celebration, but avoid being too dim once food service begins.

Place Settings and Nuances

Decorative place settings convey a story. Be casual with farmhouse dinnerware, stripe or plaid napkins, and thick woven placemats to create a cozy, relaxed feel. Rustic-style flatware and drinkware of thicker glass add an authentic touch. Add a burlap or a natural cotton tablecloth and accent runners of old lace or muslin. Finish with simple, sparse rustic florals.

Simple, clean, and rustic: this casual, country-themed table invites guests to a relaxed, family gathering.

Formal settings often include family china, vintage patterns, or special-occasion dish sets. Satin, damask linen, lace, 100% cotton tablecloths, placemats, napkins, and runners are elegant choices. Cutlery of silver or gold, crystal stemware, chargers, and additional serving implements finish the look.

The charger is the center of a place setting, the dinner plate in the center of the charger, next the salad plate, then the soup bowl on top of all three. The bread plate is in the upper left corner, and the knife is placed horizontally on top. To the charger’s immediately left the dinner fork, then the salad fork. To the direct right will be the knife, then the spoon. The dessert spoon lays horizontally above the charger. Above the dessert spoon will be the place card. The upper right-of-place setting will be first water, followed by wine glasses. (Omit Coffee cups and saucers due to space.) Top-off the plates with a napkin folded or within a decorative ring. — How to Set a Proper Table
Formal Centerpieces: decorate with seasonal fruits, florals and scented candles.

Formal tablescapes with elaborate, fresh floral centerpieces are customary. Be inclined to keep arrangements a lower profile to not interfere with your guests’ interactions. Seasonal decorations of fruits, nuts, and small gourds are also popular.

A warm and inviting table encourages loved ones to eat, relax and celebrate. To as many that gather at your table this Thanksgiving, I wish all of you a beautiful holiday. Enjoy!
