International Chocolate Day
Suit up, chocolate warriors. September 13th is game day.
There are competing dates with similar titles, but only one ‘International Chocolate Day.’ This day is recognized by the National Confectioners Association. It is also the birthday of famous chocolatier Milton S. Hershey (Coincidence? I think not.)
What singular icon deserves more of our adoration? Chocolate is peace for a hectic day, a reward for a job well done, and an incentive when all other motivations fail. It conveys to us love, sentiment, thoughtfulness, well wishes, and, yes, even guilty pleasure.
Why or how we celebrate chocolate requires no justification. Enjoying a ‘chocolate moment’ is our zen, how we practice our respectful observance. The average American is in ‘observance’ a few ounces a week, up to twelve consumed pounds yearly. Those pounds per chocolate faithful will collectively contribute to $8 billion in revenues. Isn’t that borderline Chocoholic-ism? It’s modest compared to European countries that indulge in twice our chocolate amount. A few ounces, twelve pounds, and $8 Billion. Pretty exponential.
The expanding scientific data is equally delicious. Our biology responds to chocolate’s theobromine and caffeine with boosted brain awareness. It basks in feel-good anandamide and performance-enhancing epicatechins. The darker the chocolate, the richer the benefits. Could life get any sweeter?
How do you take your chocolate? Boundless possibilities await. You are only limited on this hallowed day by your tastebuds and your imagination. Carpe Scelerisque!
