Winter Solstice Burning Ritual and a Quick Short Abundance Spell

The winter solstice is the exact moment when one of Earth’s poles is tilted at its maximum distance away from the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, it occurred on December 21, 2025, at 10:03 a.m. EST. This time marks the day with the fewest hours of daylight and the longest night of the year. It is also considered the official start of the winter season.

On this day every year, it is ideal to perform an abundance spell  to align personal goals with the “rebirth of the sun.”  Because the solstice marks the point where days begin to grow longer, magickal practitioners use this “increasing light” as a metaphor for increasing their own wealth, health, and success.

By performing this ritual, as the sun’s power grows, you symbolically tie your own prosperity to the sun’s natural cycle of growth. It is seen as a “cosmic reset” where you plant metaphorical seeds in the dark to bloom in the coming year. Since the solstice was on December 21,  you are currently in the “Window of the New Sun.” Doing  this abundance ritual today or tomorrow is still highly effective as the light is just beginning to build.

Because the solstice marks the point where days begin to grow longer, magickal practitioners use this “increasing light” as a metaphor for increasing their own wealth, health, and success.

To attract abundance during the winter solstice, you want to use ingredients that vibrate with growth, light, and the “returning sun.”In ancient traditions, thisechoes historical festivals like the Roman Saturnalia, which celebrated the god of agriculture and abundance.

Wish burning is a ritual used to release intentions or clear negative energy during the year’s longest night. It symbolizes surrendering your desires to the universe as the sun begins its return. Below is one of the most popular wish burning rituals starting on the winter solstice.

The Ritual of 12 Wishes

The  popular version, often originally called  Rauhnächte, involves these steps:

  • Write: List 12 specific wishes or intentions on separate slips of paper.
  • Burn: Starting on the solstice (Dec 21), burn one paper each night without reading it.
  • Manifest: After 12 nights, one paper remains. Open and read it—this is the wish you must actively work to achieve yourself, while the others are left to “the universe.”

Below is a video I made demonstrating both of my favorite  rituals I like to perform on the day of the winter solstice. In the beginning of this video, I mention and also explain the burning ritual.  Please keep in mind you can always do the abundance spell any time of the year that the moon is waxing.

Below are also the Key Elements or takeaways to refer back to on anointing, dressing the candle, directions, and  more details of the ingredients used (recommended)  and the ritual intent behind the application. May your intentions be clear and your path be bright—happy casting and many blessings on your journey this coming New Year!

Key Notes below

Movement and Dressing of the candle/paper

The direction a candle moves or the way you dress it determines the intent of your spell. The candle was rotated either towards the caster and/or clockwise. In candle magick, rotating a candle clockwise (deosil) or towards you is a symbolic action used to attract energy. Rolling paper towards the caster and  folding/turning clockwise every folding mimics the same intention. It will draw things towards oneself.

Cardinal Directions

Practitioners often face a specific compass point based on the goal:

  • North (Earth): Money, stability, and physical healing. Face North when performing this abundance spell.

Anointing Direction used : Attracting (Drawing In)

  • Method: Rub oil from the top (wick) to the middle, then from the bottom (base) to the middle. We anoint from the ends toward the center because the middle of the candle represents the Soul Center; this motion gathers power from both the heavens and the earth, meeting in the heart of the candle to anchor your abundance in the ‘now’.
  • As Above: Anointing from the top to the middle pulls down celestial energy, divine favor, and inspiration from the universe.
  • So Below: Anointing from the bottom to the middle draws up the grounding power of the earth, physical resources, and stability.

Candle Behavior and More

  • Rising Smoke: Your message is being “sent” to the universe.
  • Leaning Flame: Shows which direction the energy is flowing; a flame leaning toward you indicates a quick result.
  • Candle Magick: Preferred for abundance because the element of Fire represents rapid transformation and willpower

🔥 Candle Safety: Keep the Magic Safe

Before you light your wick and begin your abundance ritual, remember these essential safety tips to ensure your magic stays positive and safe:

  • Never Leave a Flame Unattended: Always stay in the room while your candle is burning. If you must leave, snuff the candle out and relight it when you return.
  • Clear the Area: Make sure your candle is on a heat-resistant surface and away from curtains, papers, or anything flammable.
  • Watch the “Dressings”: Since we use oils and herbs, be mindful that these can sometimes cause the flame to flare higher. Use a sturdy candle holder or a ceramic plate.
  • Trim the Wick: Keep your wick trimmed to about 1/4 inch before lighting. This prevents excessive smoke and ensures a steady, even burn.
  • Snuff, Don’t Blow: To keep the energy “contained” within the ritual, many practitioners prefer using a candle snuffer or a metal spoon to put out the flame rather than blowing it out.
