A supermoon is a Full Moon that occurs when the moon is also near its perigee—the point in its elliptical orbit where it is closest to Earth. The concept of a “Supermoon” is not an official astronomical term, but a popular one coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. 

The last Supermoon of the year 2025, known as the Cold Supermoon, occurred on Thursday, December 4, 2025, peaking around 6:14 PM EST. It was the third and final supermoon of the year. The name Cold Moon is derived from Native American, colonial American, and European traditions. It is a seasonal name for the full moon that occurs in December.

The moon’s mystery comes from its changing appearance and being a light in the dark night, leading to ancient beliefs that it causes madness or “lunacy,” from the Latin word luna for moon.
